Jan was in a good mood the next day. Even though her advances had never once been turned down by a professor before, there was always a first time…it was a relief to know that Dr. Callahan had caved so easily. Not that there had ever been any doubt in her mind.

It was hard not to notice that Dr. Callahan appeared to be in an especially good mood as well. During his lecture, he made more jokes than usual and seemed surprisingly enthusiastic about the muscles of mastication. And she couldn’t help but notice that the blue shirt he wore really highlighted the color in his eyes. He looked, she had to admit, pretty hot.

After lecture was over, Jan gave the professor a five minute head start to get to his office before heading over there herself. She was pleased (and a little bit flattered) to see the way his eyes lit up when she entered the room. She could tell that he was going to give her anything she wanted. “Jan,” he said, beaming, “I was hoping you’d come by…”

She closed the door behind her and locked it. She smiled. “How are you doing, Dr. Callahan?”

“Andy,” he corrected her.

She crossed the room to his desk. He pushed his chair back from the desk to allow her room to sit down on his lap. She settled down on his legs and wrapped her arms around his neck. She brought her face close to his. “Are you busy?” she asked him.

He shook his head, “Nah, just some paperwork.”

Jan knew this was the moment to drop the bombshell. But she saw the way he was looking at her, thought about the day before, and for some reason she choked. When did you become such a wuss? It wasn’t like a professor had never become smitten with her before. There were times when it was difficult to make her demands, but it had never stopped her before. There was nothing that special about Andy Callahan.

“What?” He was looking at her, eyebrows raised. “Is something wrong?”

“Nothing,” she said, forcing a smile. He kissed her, that same tender, grateful kiss from yesterday. She felt his fingers slide into her dark hair, gently pulling her closer to him. She pulled away, trying to ignore the confusion on his face as she took a deep breath. “Actually, there is something that’s sort of been on my mind…”

He frowned in concern. “What?”

“I just… I feel like I can’t stop thinking about my grade on that exam,” she sighed. “It’s really… distracting me.”

At this point, at least half of the professors would immediately say something along the lines of: Don’t you worry yourself about that grade. We’ll fix that right now. It saved both of them face if they volunteered to change her grade without having to be persuaded.

Unfortunately, Dr. Callahan wasn’t going for it.

“I’m sure you’ll do better on the next exam,” he assured her. “I’d be happy to tutor you myself. I do that all the time for students who are having trouble. It’s important to me that you do well.”

“Yes, but…” Jan ran her hand over the inside of his thigh. “It’s going to be hard to pass with such a low grade on the first exam.”

“Janice, honey,” he said, placing his fingers around her wrist, stopping her trajectory up his thigh, “I appreciate what you’re doing, but don’t you have some studying to do?”

Jan’s face burned. Her eyes met his and she knew that he knew exactly what she was trying to do. And he wasn’t going to make this easy for her.

I’m afraid you have no idea who you’re dealing with, Callahan.

“Andy,” she said thoughtfully, “how do you think the dean feels about professors who have sex with their students?”

She watched him carefully for his reaction. To her surprise, his face was impassive. “They probably don’t like it too much,” Dr. Callahan said with a shrug. “I’ve actually heard of professors getting fired for that.”

“Really?” Jan said in mock surprise.

He nodded. “Yeah, sure. And some of them end up wrecking their marriages too. I heard about a professor recently from another university whose wife left him after he slept with one of his students.” He smiled at her, “Actually, I believe he went to your former university. Maybe you knew him? Dr. Douglas Fenmore?”

Jan felt all the color drain from her face. Doug Fenmore had been one of those professors who initially resisted the grade change, forcing her to place an unfortunate phone call to his wife. The call to the wife always came first, because a call to the university would be much more of a scandal. Of course, as soon as she called his wife, Doug realized she meant business.

But how the hell did Dr. Callahan know about that? Nobody knew. Except, of course, for her, Doug Fenmore, and Mrs. Fenmore.

“He’s pretty pissed off at that student who wrecked his marriage,” Dr. Callahan went on. “Would you believe he was angry enough to call some of the professors here to personally warn us about that student? As if any of us would be dumb enough to get taken in by something like that.” For the first time in a long time, Jan was completely speechless. She got up off his lap and backed away, staring at him.

“Personally,” he said, “I wouldn’t worry anyway. I don’t have a marriage to wreck. And I’m the only disabled member on the entire faculty and have been for quite a while. I could pretty much get away with whatever I want. I mean, it’s not like they’re going to think that I seduced my student, right?”

“You knew all along,” Jan breathed, shaking her head.

“Well, it was nice of Dr. Fenmore to give me that heads up,” he said. “But when you came in here yesterday wearing that short skirt… come on, I’m not stupid, Janice.”

Of all the professors she had been with, she couldn’t believe that Dr. Callahan was the one who had caught on to her. Sweet, innocent Dr. Callahan. The entire time they were having sex yesterday, when he was acting so nervous, he had known all along what she was up to. It was all an act. She was furious.

“Congratulations,” she said. “You figured me out.”

She stormed off in the direction of the door, but before she got there, she heard his voice: “Hold on, Jan. Where do you think you’re going?”

She turned and saw him wheeling toward her. “What?” she said irritably.

He raised an eyebrow at her, “Well, I don’t think it’s fair that you got me all worked up and now you’re just leaving.”

Jan’s shoulders sagged, “What do you want?”

He gestured toward the empty seat. “Sit down, Jan,” he said. “Don’t be in such a hurry.”

Keeping her eyes pinned on his face, she settled gingerly into the chair. She folded her hands in her lap and kept her knees close together. Dr. Callahan wheeled closer to her and she shut her eyes as she felt his fingers slide onto her neck. As he leaned forward and his lips grazed hers, a tear fell from her right eye. She bit her lip, praying for the strength to get through this.

“Get out of here, Jan.”

She opened her eyes. He was leaning back in his wheelchair, shaking his head.

“Huh?” she said.

“I’m not going to rape you,” he said, rolling his eyes. “So stop crying. Jesus.”

She didn’t know what to say. She wiped her eyes with the back of her hand.

“Jan…” He was looking at her now like he was her professor and not just some guy who wanted to make it with her. “Have you ever had a real relationship with another person? I mean, one where a grade wasn’t involved?”

She didn’t even have to think about it. She had never even kissed a man before if a grade wasn’t involved. “No,” she replied.

“You should,” he said to her.

She lowered her eyes, “You’re right.”

“You know,” Dr. Callahan sighed, “the reason I wanted you to stay just now wasn’t to torture you or anything. I know yesterday we were both kind of messing with each other, but… well, I enjoyed being with you. A lot. And not because I’m the pathetic loser who never gets any action that you think I am.”

“I don’t—”

“Please,” he shook his head at her. “I know you thought I was an easy target.”

“Maybe,” Jan admitted.

“I guess part of me was hoping that you enjoyed yourself too,” he said, shrugging. “At least a little bit.” He grinned, “I mean, you came, right? That or you deserve an Oscar.”

She took a second to study Andy Callahan’s face. Despite what he had done to her, she knew he was a good guy at heart. And when she looked past the grades and the exams and all that crap, she had to admit that he was pretty cute. No, he was really cute. And the truth was that yes, she had enjoyed herself yesterday. As much as she had allowed herself to.

But sex just for the sake of enjoyment? That seemed like such a foreign concept to her.

She noticed that Dr. Callahan was still grinning at her. She raised her eyebrows at him, “What?”

“You’re thinking about kissing me,” he said. “I can tell.”

“No, I’m not,” she lied.

“Whatever you say…”

Jan smiled, despite herself. She didn’t know what to think anymore. She knew that no matter what happened between them, there was no way in hell that Callahan would ever alter the grades on her behalf. Yet she suddenly realized she didn’t care. She still wanted him.

She put her hand on his cheek, drawing him closer to her. She pressed her lips against his, allowing his tongue to slide into her mouth. He was more aggressive this time, more sure of himself. This was the real Andy Callahan and she liked it.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

For his entire life, Andy Callahan had always been known for being straight as an arrow. He was the responsible one, the one who always followed the rules to the letter, sometimes to a fault. He had never cheated in his life, always turned in assignments a day early, and he was always the designated driver. Andy’s friends used to tease him that he lived his life like an old man.

Yet now he found himself doing something that not only was ethically very questionable, but could easily have cost him his job. Despite what he had told Jan about being able to get away with “whatever he wanted”, he knew the dean wouldn’t take it lightly if it was discovered what was going on between him and Jan.

When Andy got the phone call four months earlier, he never would have imagined in a million years he’d ever be sleeping with one of his students. It was the middle of August and he was in his office, preparing the curriculum for the coming year. He was listening to his messages and he heard the voicemail from a Dr. Douglas Fenmore, asking Andy to get in touch with him regarding “an urgent matter.”

Andy was intrigued. He called Fenmore at what turned out to be his cell phone number. “Dr. Callahan,” Fenmore said eagerly. “I’m really glad you called me back.”

Fenmore’s voice was scratchy and hoarse from what sounded like years of heavy smoking. “What did you want to talk to me about?” Andy asked.

“You’re the anatomy professor, right?” Fenmore said.

“I am,” Andy confirmed. “What’s this about?”

“I need to talk to you about one of your students for the coming year,” Fenmore said. “Her name is Janice Wright.”

A few weeks ago, Andy had received a facebook containing names and photos of all the incoming medical students. Like he did every year, he memorized each and every one of them. He liked to know who all his students were, and since he had a nearly photographic memory, it didn’t take him long. He recalled Janice Wright to be a girl with straight dark brown hair that framed a pale, narrow face.

“Yes, what about her?” Andy asked.

“She’s going to try to sleep with you to get a better grade,” Fenmore said.

For a moment, Andy thought the older man was joking. Or at least, he had heard wrong. “What?”

“That’s what she did to me,” Fenmore explained. “Seduced me, then told me she’d turn me in if I didn’t change her grade. When I didn’t give in, she told my wife what happened between us.” Fenmore’s voice broke, “And my wife left me.”

“I, uh… I’m sorry,” Andy said awkwardly. Of course, he didn’t have a lot of sympathy for a man who had cheated on his wife with a girl who was less than half his age. Fenmore probably got what was coming to him.

“I know what you’re thinking,” Fenmore said, “but I never did anything like that before I met Jan. She… she’s so… my god…”

Andy was silent, unsure what to say. He dug into the drawer by his desk and pulled out the facebook inside. He turned the pages until he reached the photo of Janice Wright. She didn’t look like anything special—she was kind of plain, in fact. This had to be some kind of mistake.

Fenmore took a deep breath, “I just wanted to warn you, Dr. Callahan. She prays on us old pathetic professors. She’s practically a professional. Don’t let her do to you what she did to me.”

“Yeah, well, thanks for the warning,” Andy said, trying not to take it personally that he had just been called an old pathetic professor. “I’ll be sure to look out for her.”

Andy hadn’t taken the warning very seriously though. Janice Wright looked so innocuous in her photo, and furthermore, Andy knew he wasn’t the kind of professor who was likely to be seduced by a student. Hell, he never even went above the speed limit. The thought of him having an affair with a student was almost laughable.

Until he laid eyes on Janice Wright.

The second he saw her, he understood exactly what Douglas Fenmore had been talking about. There was something about Jan that was almost irresistibly sexy. Something about her eyes, her pert breasts straining against her T-shirt, the way she ran her hands through her dark hair. And by the way she shrugged off her failing quiz grades, he knew that Fenmore had been telling the truth about her.

When he graded her abysmal first exam, he realized that she intended to sleep with him to erase her failure. And as much as he had always lived by the rules, he realized that he desperately wanted to sleep with Jan Wright. Lord knew, it had been a really long time for him. His confidence with women wasn’t so good these days, so it would be nice to have a sure thing.

But there was no way he was changing her grade. No way in hell.

The idealistic part of him wanted to help her. If he tutored her, she could pass anatomy without having to cheat. He could teach her that she didn’t need to sleep her way through school and she could actually earn her good grades. If she seriously wanted to be a surgeon, he’d make her into the best damn surgeon there ever was. He believed that deep down, Jan Wright was a decent person and somehow she had just lost her way.

Of course, all his idealistic thinking went out the window when he was thrusting inside her. All he could think about was how incredible this was, how he couldn’t believe he was fucking a sexy 22 year old girl right in his office. And he could tell that even though she believed she was doing this for a grade, she was enjoying herself too.

And that was how straight-as-an-arrow Andy Callahan ended up having an affair with one of his students.
